Warriors, Eagles split double-header

By Jerry W. Kram
The New Town Eagles Boys and Girls Basketball teams traveled to Mandaree Tuesday and came away with a split decision. The Eagles girls overcame a depleted Warriors squad by a score of 60-52 but the Eagles boys couldn’t overcome a flood of fouls as they fell 60-55.
In the first game, the Lady Eagles played even with the Warriors, who were missing two starters because of injuries and another who was limited in her first game back from an injury. The Warriors jumped out a seven point lead in the opening minutes of the game, but the Eagles equalized and tied the game up at 15. The teams traded the lead through the second quarter and the score at halftime was tied at 32.
“We just had too many turnovers,” said Warriors Head Coach Chris Smith. “They kept changing defenses and we didn’t adjust. That’s what happens when you have some young players and dealing with some injuries.”
It wasn’t until the closing minutes of the fourth quarter that the Eagles were able to put any distance between themselves and the Warriors. The Warriors had an uncharacteristic shooting slump late in the fourth quarter that allowed the Eagles to build an eight point cushion at the end of the game.
The Eagles broke a six game losing streak with the victory and are now 2-6. The Warriors dropped to 3-4. Freshman Ivy Fox came off the bench and scored 15 points for the Eagles. Makaila Martin led the Eagles with 18 points.
