Troopers win OT thriller

One would have thought it was a state championship victory. Fans standing and screaming. Players hoisting the hero of the game on their shoulders. Opponents kneeling in anguish on the field after suffering a heart-breaking loss.
For the Garrison-Max Troopers, victory was sweet. A 25-24 overtime win over the New Town Eagles. The win was made even sweeter because it was homecoming.
The game saw the Eagles strike first. New Town QB Lucas Wollschlager went in from one yard out. The two-point conversion failed and the Eagles were up 6-0.
The Troopers scored twice in the second half – the second coming with 1:24 remaining. But New Town quickly answered before the half-time horn. Preston Smith took the ensuing kickoff and ran it back 80 yards for a score and the game was tied at intermission, 12-12.
The second quarter saw New Town score again. Once again, it was Smith who ran one in from 16 yards out.
