Teams stumble in season openers

By Jerry W. Kram
The New Town Eagles and Parshall Braves showed they have a ways to go against the top teams as they opened their season in the Shootout on the Prairie in Minot last Friday and Saturday.
The Eagles started out against the Thompson Tommies, who are rated seventh in the North Dakota preseason coaches poll. The Tommies played their second string much of the second half and still coasted to a 66-38 victory. The Eagles bounced back Saturday against the Bottineau Stars on Saturday, coming from behind in the second half for a 53-44 win.
The Parshall Braves received votes in the preseason coaches poll, as did their Friday opponent the Velva Aggies. After a competitive first quarter, the Aggies took control in the second and third quarter for a 22 point victory, 60-38. Parshall fared better on Saturday but the Westhope-Newburg Sioux had a good third quarter to hold off the Braves 50-45.
