Stanley takes Region 8 title

First state tournament since 1938
By Jerry W. Kram
The Parshall Braves and Kenmare Honkers may have been favored in the run up to the Region 8 Boys Basketball Tournament held in Williston, but it was the Stanley Bluejays who will be making their first trip to a state basketball tournament since Franklin Roosevelt was in office.
The Braves and New Town Eagles had a disappointing tournament. The Eagles potent offense was shut down by the Kenmare Honkers in the first round. The Eagles, who wound up with a 12-9 record, averaged 80 points a game this season. The fewest points they scored were 52 against Parshall in the semi-finals of the District 15 tournament. The Honkers outrebounded the Eagles by nearly a 2-1 margin to roll to a 74-39 victory in the first round.
The Eagles were hurt by an inability to hit from outside the three point arc. They ended the game hitting just two of 23 three point attempts. Meanwhile, Jacob Rodin of Kenmare scored at will, racking up 27 points. Three other Honkers were in double figures while none of the Eagles reached double figures. Fouls played a big part in the game as the Honkers went 20 for 27 from the charity stripe.
