New Town surprised the critics and some of its opponents, finishing fourth in the Region 3 tournament and qualifying six individuals for state wrestling competition. In addition, Eagles head coach Terry Mathson was named Region 3 Coach of the Year.
New Town was scheduled to wrestle the North Dakota Class B powerhouse Oakes Tornadoes in team competition at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Thursday with individual matches to follow.
Mathson admitted his team is going to have a tough time with Oakes, a team that easily won the East-West Invitational in New Salem in January, a tournament that is often considered a precursor to the state tournament.
Individually, the Eagles are far better off. Billy Hall is a returning state champion and although he finished third in the East-West, is said to be in his true form coming up on the state tournament. Hall’s first match will be against James Thielges of South Border.
