Two of the top ranked teams in the state will meet for the Region 8 Girls Basketball Championship on Thursday. Both the Watford City Wolves and New Town Lady Eagles had a fairly easy time with their semifinal opponents Tuesday night at the tournament held at Williston State College. The winner will face either Napoleon or Ellendale in the first round of North Dakota State Tournament in Fargo on Thursday, March 21.
The Lady Braves of Parshall will meet the Ray Jays for third place at 6 p.m. Thursday. The championship game will start 20 minutes after the conclusion of the third place game.
The Lady Eagles earned their way with an opening round victory over the Divide County Maroons on Monday. The Lady Eagles shot out of the gate with 22 points over the Maroons, who finished their season with a record of 9-14. The Maroons scored just six points in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Lady Eagles turned up the volume on their defense and allowed the Maroons a single point. After that, New Town Coach Orville Drosdol put in his reserves in the second half and they secured the 50-30 victory.
Nine Lady Eagles scored in the game led by Jaye Two Bears with 12 points. Hannah Jacobs led the scoring for the Maroons, also with 12 points.
