There are any number of scenarios that could play out and often do in the North Dakota State Class B Boys Basketball Tournament. And after New Town knocked off Watford City for the Region 8 title, there’s been a lot of talk on the street about the three-day event.
But New Town head coach Chuck Hunter presented a simple philosophy that apparently has been working very well all season. This team needs to think about one game at a time before looking into the semis or championship.
Hunter’s colleague and New Town athletic director Mike Pusc is optimistic about the 2011 Eagles team. He said he has seen a lot of good, athletic teams over the years, and this one ranks right up there.
This is actually the 10th appearance in the state tournament for the New Town Eagles. Their last appearance was in 1981, so this is the first time in 30 years that the Eagles are in the big dance.
New Town last won the title in 1980 with it’s 59-50 win over Berthold. Prior to that, the Eagles placed second in 1976, falling to LaMoure, and second in 1963 with a loss to Kenmare, which incidently, is the only team that defeated the Eagles this season.
