On paper New Town and Trenton were as evenly matched as anyone could imagine and that’s how the opening round match of the District 15 volleyball tournament played out Monday night in Stanley.
Although Trenton took commanding leads in the opening and final games, the two teams were evenly matched in the middle two games with New Town winning game two and Trenton winning game three by slight margins.
In the first game, Trenton opened up a 4-0 lead and never fell behind enroute to a 25-8 victory. The Eagles brought the score to 7-4 and following a long volley, kept the score close at 9-5. But three aces late in the game by Trenton’s Charalyn Vondall put the game away for the Tigers, 25-8.
New Town came storming back, however, in the second game to make it interesting. After Trenton’s Courtney Moran forced a kill to open the scoring, the service of New Town’s Gina Poitra gave the Eagles their first lead of the night at 3-2.
They slowly built that lead and at one point held a 4-point edge at 6-2, but Trenton came back to tie it at 9 and take the lead 10-9, after a Vondall ace. Trenton held a 1-point edge until New Town tied the score at 12 when southpaw Kassidy Brenna aced the Tigers. New Town then took the lead once again and Trenton, once again, tied the score at 14.
That brought Poitra back to the service stripe and while there, New Town built up an 18-14 lead. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the end of Trenton, as they continued chipping away at the New Town defense.
