New Town second, Parshall fourth in Rugby boys race

Even though Rugby won its own invitational cross country meet as a team with 70 points, New Town’s Justin Many Ribs took top individual honors that helped his team to a second-place finish, finishing ahead of many of the Class B teams that will be competing in the state meet in Valley City later this month.
Many Ribs completed the course in 16:21, which paced him 14 seconds ahead of Parshall’s Kenny Wells. Alex Baker, who has consistently been a top runner this year, finished in third place for New Town in 16:47, just 12 seconds back of Wells.
The finish times may change slightly, but this has been a continuing trend this year in high school cross country in northwestern North Dakota. Saturday’s race was the fifth time in 2009 that Many Ribs, Wells and Baker have finished one, two and three in competition.
Wells’ second-place finish helped the Braves to a fourth-place finish overall with 114, falling just back of much larger school Valley City. Trey Bruce was 19th across the line, followed by Brandon Bird Lying Down in 44th, Nathaniel Wells, 54th, Tony Yellow Wolf, 59th, Aaron Yellow Wolf, 62nd and Myles Odermann, 72nd, who ran one of his first varsity races.
For New Town, Billy Stevens was the closest competitor to Baker, finishing in 27th of the 91 runners in the race. Mike Youngbird was right behind in 29th in a time of 19 minutes. David Miranda finished four seconds back in 32nd place and Preston Smith, was 66th in 21 minutes.
