For the first time in several years, New Town went into its annual, early January invitational wrestling tournament with some optimism that there is strength in numbers. The Eagles didn’t disappoint.
New Town finished a strong fourth while wrestling against seven other teams that braved the winter cold to compete against some of the best Class B wrestling competition in northwestern North Dakota.
The Eagles picked up 110 points, finishing just two points behind third place Stanley, but were outdistanced by winner Velva with 212.5 and second-place Des Lacs/Burlington, which finished in second with 164.5. Kenmare was fifth, Rugby sixth, Belcourt seventh and Harvey eighth.
Individually, New Town made a decent run with Slade Stringer, Jace Uran and McCrae Danks all finishing second in their respective weight classes. Stringer wrestled his way to the top of the 285 weight class before being outdueled by Velva’s Taylor Barstad.
