New Town harriers showing early-season promise

In the famous words of New York Yankees baseball manager Yogi Berra, “this is deja vu all over again.”
But the sport is cross country and the team is the New Town Eagles. They seem to be picking up right where they left off last year that took them to state titles in Class B.
The Eagles opened the season Aug. 21 in Jamestown and according to head coach Brian Anderson, it was a bit unusual analyzing the meet as Class A and Class B competitors were bunched into one group.
However, he said the Eagles ran well. Considering 77 runners in the girls division, Jayli Fimbres took ninth, followed by Brooke Fettig 31st and Alvina Wolf, 47th. In addition, Symbria Bell came in third in the junior varsity division.
Eighty-three boys ran in the varsity division and Justin Many Ribs came in second, followed by Alex Baker, sixth and Clyde Baker, 54th.
It was a great early-season test, according to Anderson, and many of the athletes showed a lot of promise in that meet including Taylor McGrady, Taylor LeBeau, Shayna Salter and Joe Baker.
“We didn’t have a full squad in any of the divisions, due to some athletes not ready to run yet,” Anderson said. “Those who did compete, did very well and we are excited about how well they performed this early in the season against a very tough field of runners in all divisions.”
On Aug. 29, the teams traveled to Dickinson and showed their true grit, taking seventh in the girls division and fifth in the boys division.
