New Town elementary wrestling programs come to a close
The elementary wrestling season came to a close with the final season-ending tournament in Stanley March 26. The young elementary wrestlers claimed 15 champions of the 35 New Town wrestlers entered. Nine more wrestlers also made it to the championship matches, finishing in second place.
Earlier the same week on Monday, the New Town squad won the championship trophy of the annual “Battle of the Birds”. The event is a triangular dual meet event in which the New Town “Eagles, Kenmare “Honkers” and the Stanley “Blue Jays” wrestle each other separately to claim a team champion. New Town won over Stanley 27-25 and Kenmare 28-5. Stanley won over Kenmare 30-4.
“This was a spirited bunch of young wrestlers,” said coach Terry Mathson. “We had fun coaching them. They really improved the last two weeks of the season. It makes you wish we had a couple more weeks of competition left. We lost to Stanley in a dual in New Town earlier in the season and also some of the wrestlers were beating opponents they had lost to in other tournaments. I think that show we made progress and have good young athletes coming up for the future for whatever sports they choose to participate in. I would like to comment the parents who gave great support to their young wrestlers and to the coaches.”
