New Town Eagles come home with state Class B hardware
Fimbres and Many Ribs named Senior athletes of the year

Sportswriters across the state knew that New Town was going to have a strong day in the state Class B cross country meet. And they did, finishing second in the boys division and third in the girls division under the auspices of veteran coach Brian Anderson.
The meet, held on a dreary, rainy day in Valley City last Saturday, brought the best runners from across North Dakota to the Bjornson Golf Course and in the end the Eagles boys and girls turned in outstanding performances.
Justin Many Ribs took top honors in the boys race, winning the 5-K run in 16:22. Not only was it the top score, but Many Ribs was named the Class B Powerade Cross Country Senior Athlete of the Year.
And Many Ribs win over Parshall’s Kenny Wells was a scene that has played out through the entire season with the exception of the regional meet in Beulah. Otherwise, Many Ribs took top honors, Wells was second and New Town’s Alex Baker ran a strong third. In addition, Clyde Baker ran one of his better races of the year as well, coming across the line in 17:30 to help his team to its second-pace finish with 93 points and earn him All-State honors with his top-20 finish.
Rugby, the East Region champion, won the meet with a low score of 64 and New Town, the West Region champion, tallied 94.
Anderson knew that Rugby was going to be tough to beat and he said that in a pre-meet interview. He said they had a lot of strengths and that concerned him.
But his boys team excelled above his expectations.
“They finished a strong second place,” Anderson said. “This was another great performance in a very strong field with an excellent Rugby team.”
