New Town brings home state crown

By Jerry W. Kram

The New Town Eagles opened their athletic year with a state cross country championship and are ending it with a state track and field championship.

The Eagles collected three first place medals and dominated the middle distance events to collect 79 points at the North Dakota Class B State Meet at the Community Bowl in Bismarck. They collected 41 points on the first day of competition and held off a late charge by Dickinson Trinity who finished with 71 points.

Eagles Head Coach Bruce Anderson was honored as the Coach of the Year. He credited the team with the depth to pull of the victory. He said the meet was the culmination of a year of hard work.

"It was a very satisfying meet," Anderson said. "The kids worked hard all year long. They won six different meets and placed second in three others. The won the conference and placed second in regionals. So we were expecting good things in the state meet and they came through to cap off a very special year."
