One game short. That’s how close it was.
The Makoti Mavericks’ bid to advance to the state American Legion Class B Baseball Tournament in LaMoure this week came up just shy this past Saturday in Crosby.
The Mavericks came into the section tournament as the No. 3 seed behind eventual champ Garrison-Max-Central McLean and Watford City. While the two top seeds had the easier road, it was the Mavericks who put on a fight, just missing a trip to state.
Makoti opened the tournament, defeating Stanley 9-3. The Mavs, with many players having state tournament experience from this year’s high school baseball season, served notice they were for real, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after three innings, never looking back. Aaron Schenfisch picked up the win for Makoti.
Against Watford City, it was a pitcher’s duel. With their backs against the wall in a double elimination tournament, Makoti outlasted their Watford counterparts 2-1 on the arm of Chandler Karna. Makoti scored a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win.
