With six final games on the schedule last week, the Makoti pitching staff was taxed to the limit. In true Maverick style they came through in the clutch and Makoti ended the regular season on an eight-game winning streak.
The American Legion action started Tuesday with commanding 10-0 and 9-2 wins over Tioga. Then Makoti traveled to Renville County for a pair of 11-4 and 8-6 victories before returning home to outlast Crosby 5-3 and 8-6 Thursday.
“It was a pretty good week, we were trying to get some momentum going into the tournament,” coach Sonny Bozza said.
The Mavericks, who finished the regular season 7-5 in conference counters, will rematch with Crosby to open the Section 6 Tournament Tuesday. The tournament continues through Thursday in Garrison.
The early meeting with Tioga had to be canceled due to weather so last Tuesday was the first time the two teams met. Going into the action, Bozza admitted he didn’t know what to expect, especially since he was planning on putting some of the team’s younger arms on the mound.
Fifteen-year-old Tristan Gray took up the pitching duties and went a complete seven innings giving up only two hits.
