Gabby and Mia Wilkinson led the New Town Lady Eagles to victory in the District 15 Girls Basketball Championship game. They combined for 46 points and helped defeat the Lady Wolves of Watford City 83-64.
“The Wilkinson girls came to play tonight,” said Lady Eagles Coach Orville Drosdal. “We wanted the ball inside tonight. Gabby is a goer who will get her shots. Mia is around the rim, but she did drop a couple of long shots tonight. We wanted to work on Watford City’s post and our girls did a nice job of finding those two and getting them the ball.”
The Lady Eagles had a rocky start to the evening, shooting poorly in the first quarter and giving up some sharp backdoor passes for easy layups for the Lady Wolves. Still, they were able to survive the first quarter leading by 1 thanks to G. Wilkinson’s 8 points to start the game. The second quarter was also close, and was tied at 27 with 2:21 to go, but the Lady Eagles were able to build a 5 point lead at the half, 34-29. Taylor McGrady played excellent defense, holding Watford City standout McKayla Haugeberg to 11 points for the game.
“We didn’t play our best basketball in the first half,” Drosdal said. “We missed a lot of shots around the rim. I think our free throws were around 40 percent. But we still had a five point lead. It felt like we should have been down about 12 or 14 points.”
