Hiddenwood derby more than just the biggest catch

With the sun peaking out over the trees and the wind breezing by, the morning couldn’t have gotten much better for oil workers Pete Kazlierczak and his derby partner Dave Johnson sitting on the courtesy dock. Then a tug at the line made it almost perfect as they reeled in the first of the day’s catch.
The pair were just two of the 122 fishermen trying their luck at the annual Hiddenwood Sportsmen Club Fishing Derby last Saturday. In it’s 26th consecutive year, the tournament was cut into three categories as fishermen could win prizes for walleye, northern or pan fish, which included perch or small mouth bass.
It was the chance to get out on the lake that drew Kazlierczak to the tournament, as well as the $10 entrance fee. He mentioned that he tries to fish as much as they can but with flooding this spring, lake access has been at a premium.
Most of the fisherman could agree that they were fishing the derby for the environment, but a chance to win a couple bucks in prize money was an added bonus.
