New Town competed in the 16-team Rugby tournament on Friday and Saturday finishing in 11th place and placing six wrestlers in the top eight.
Advancing to the championship match for the Eagles were Eric Danks and Jess Hall. Each wrestler lost to the No. 1 state ranked wrestler in his weight class. At 125 pounds, Hall lost to Mike Rusk of New Salem 12 – 1 after gaining two pins and a decision win to reach the championship.
Danks won by pin and decision to reach the finals where he lost 3 – 0 to Devin Olson of South Border (Ashley – Wishek). Olson now has the No. 1 ranking at 215 pounds in Class B.
Freshman Sheldon Standish fought his way to a surprising sixth-place finish at 189 pounds. He lost to the No. 4 seed and then was to face the No. 3 seed in the wrestle backs. A surprise injury default by Kenmare/Tioga/Ray gave Standish a big chance to place in the tournament. He took full advantage of the opportunity and knocked the No. 7 seed from Linton to advance to the consolation semis where he fell to Velva and then lost to Devils Lake 5 -2 in the fifth-place match.
