Grapplers prove they can compete in a big tournament The New Town Eagles advanced three wrestlers to the championship finals during the prestigious Rugby Invitational Tournament Friday and Saturday. Billy Hall, at 145 pounds, remained undefeated by pinning Bill Vetch of Ashley-Wishek to take first place in his weight class. Placing second in the tournament were Justin and Jeremy Grinnell. Other place winners included Eric Danks and Jess Hall, both fourth-place finishers, Slade Stringer, seventh and Jesse Bear and Jace Uran, eighth. Carrington won the tournament with 181 points, followed by Napoleon, 168.5, South Border, 145, Rolla-St. John-Rock Lake, 119.5, Rugby 109, North Border-Cavalier, 106, New Town, 102, Linton, 93.5, Ryan, 75, Killdeer, 66, Harvey, 56, and Kenmare-Tioga-Ray, 47. "Our five main point scorers had good efforts," said head coach Terry Mathson. "Billy Hall pinned his three opponents and was very dominant. The Grinnells did well, but weren’ at their best in the championship matches. They have missed too many practices for different reasons lately and it takes toll. Hopefully they regroup and get to 100 percent." For the second tournament in a row, Jess Hall came away with an upset, according to Mathson. He manufactured a 6-3 win over highly ranked Josh Armitage of Killdeer.
