Eagles’ Boys runners-up at state meet
Wells dominates for Braves, Lady Braves and Lady Eagles place 8th and 9th

The 2011 State Cross Country meet was held over the weekend at the Rose Creek Golf Course in Fargo. Area runners were very successful in their final race of the season: the New Town Eagles’ Boys runners took second place behind Rugby, Ken Wells, Jr. ended his senior year with a second straight individual championship for the Parshall Boys’, the Parshall Lady Braves took eighth place and the New Town Lady Eagles took ninth place.
A total of 36 teams ran in the state meet. Just 15 points separated the Eagles from Rugby as Clyde Baker (fifth place-17:15.19) finished his senior season as an all-state runner. The Eagles had a great running performance from Ryan Wheeling (23rd place-18:21.17) who took 13th place just a couple of weeks earlier at the West Region Cross Country meet. Rounding out the Eagles top five runners were Joe Baker (31st place-18:38.68), Joe Chase (33rd place-18:42.26) and Dylan Bear (37th place-18:47.60). Also running very well for the Eagles Boys were William Stevens (42nd place-18:59.86), Wayne Fox (57th place-19:24.06), Terrance Steele (62nd place-19:31.37), Isiah Hale (66th place-19:40.76) and Nape Fox (75th place-19:55.99).
“I thought we had a pretty good run,” said New Town Eagles head coach, Brian Anderson. “Rugby ran a real good team race. We had a lot of young guys; it was their first time at the state meet. Running in that situation I thought we ran pretty well. You want to end up on top but it is a good learning experience for a lot of the guys. It should provide some spark or incentive for next year. We had some other good performances. We had a lot of guys that finished between 23 and 50. All of those guys get good experience and it should help for next year.
“Clyde had another great state meet for us,” Anderson continued. “He finished in fifth. It is his third time being all-state so I was glad to see him cap off his career with another great race.”
