Eagles triumph in home opener
By Jerry W. Kram
The New Town Eagles girls basketball team improved their record to 2-1 with a 70-39 victory over the Killdeer Cowboys in the team’s 2019-2020 home opener.
The Eagles pulled away from the 1-5 Cowboys quickly in the first quarter 20-10. First year Head Coach Chuck Wells said he is installing a new offense and the team is still learning the system. He said he wants the girls to have a stronger team concept that works the ball inside to Ivy Fox and Brooklyn Fox.
“We are really stressing team ball,” Wells said. “In our first game this year (against Thompson) the continuity wasn’t there. It’s a good thing we have practice because that’s where you work out the kinks. That Minot Shootout gave us a good look at what we needed to improve. We like to push the ball, that’s one of our focuses.”
The Eagles had a few early season missteps, including a few instances of traveling and double dribbles, but Wells he has already witnessed a lot of improvement in the team.
“In the past the liked to put the ball on the floor and old habits can be hard to break,” Wells said. “I had to remind them that we pass first. The only time you dribble is if you don’t have anyone to pass to, then you advance that.”
