Eagles take two from White Shield, Washburn

By Jerry W. Kram
Dyan Fox has likened the 2018 New Town Volleyball team to a chemistry experiment, trying to find the right combination of players to gel into a unified team. It looks like those experiments are paying off as the Eagles netters took two wins last week beating White Shield 3-1 and Washburn 3-2.
Against Washburn, the Eagles may have had a little extra inspiration as former World Boxing Champion Virgil Hill and his wife, Olympic Gold Medalist Denean Howard-Hill, visited with the team before the match.
Both teams started the match slowly, and the Cardinals were up by just two points at 6-4 before they started to pull away in the first set. They built a 15-7 lead before running away with the set 25-10. It looked like it might be a quick night for the Eagles as Washburn jumped out with the first five points of the second set. They continued to hold a five point lead for most of the set until the Eagles closed the margin to two points at 22-10. But after a side out, the Cardinals took the final points to win the set 21-25 and go up 2-0.
