Eagles soar over Blue Jays By MARVIN BAKER Even though the New Town girls basketball team lacks height, the players used rebounding effectively Thursday night in the second quarter to pull away from the Stanley Blue Jays and take a 50-34 win. The game was close in the first with both teams trading baskets and at one point, the two District 15 teams swapped three pointers. For a very short time in the opening quarter, the Blue Jays controlled the ball and had a lead finishing the first with a 14-11 lead. But it wouldn’t last. New Town came out in the second quarter like a different team than the one that took the floor to open the game. They rebounded, they ran, they assisted, they scored. And the fans loved it. Sheyenne Brady and Jayli Fimbres led the charge, each scoring 14. Shayna Taft hit double figures with 11 and Alvina Wolf added nine and Hope Baker hit a bucket to finish out the scoring. Rachel Mehus was the only Blue Jay to score in double figures for Stanley with 10. But the majority of this game was more about asssists than it was who scored the most points. Taft’s sharp passes to the inside and Brady’s lobs on the give and go quickly put New Town in control as the clock swung toward halftime. The third was even more impressive for Coach Orville Drosdal as his kids played stellar defense, holding Stanley scoreless in the third en route to a 42-22, insurmountable lead going into the fourth quarter. New Town added eight points in the final stanza but it was all academic at that point as Stanley basically hit its average per quarter and the Eagles sealed another win with the 50-34 score.
