Eagles soar in season opener

New Town Eagles girls basketball coach Damon Brady was obviously pleased with his team’s domination of the Ray Jays, 81-45, but he also saw a lot of things the team needs to work on.
“It was your typical first game,” Brady said. “Some of the girls got the jitters. But overall I was pleased with our effort, our attitude. We have some things to work on in our execution both offensively and defensively. We know Ray is a team that is going to work hard.”
Both teams had a lot of turnovers, but the Eagles were much better at turning those bad bounces into points. The Eagles jumped out to quick lead in the first quarter but the Jays were able to narrow that lead to two points midway through the first quarter. The Eagles kept the pressure on with outside shooting by Tyleigh Brady and a strong inside game by Caitlyn Tveter and Tamara Fox. The Eagles finished the first quarter with a 17-13 lead.
The Eagles took control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Jays 28-11. Sophomore Makaila Martin contributed at both ends of the court, forcing some key turnovers and scoring 10 points for the game. With about a minute left in the half, the Eagles took a 20 point lead over the Jays and never relinquished it.
