Eagles prevail in double headers

By Jerry W. Kram
The New Town Eagles boys and girls basketball teams played two double headers and came away with victories in all four games, beating Beach and Mandaree.
The Eagles went on the road to face the Beach Buccaneers Saturday. The boys had a big second half to win 81-62 while the Lady Eagles dominated the fourth quarter to come away with a 67-43 win.
On Tuesday, the Mandaree Warriors visited New Town and the Lady Eagles welcomed the visitors with a 65-52 victory and the boys squeaked out a 69-65 win.
Lady Eagles Head Coach Damon Brady said the team is progressing well for this point in the season.
“I emphasized this week that we are one-third of the way through the season,” he said. “We got to 4 and 2 and now in the next six games we want to improve on every stat. We are averaging 57 points a game and our opponents are averaging 49 points. Our goal is to stiffen up our defense so we only allow teams 40 points.”
He also said the Lady Eagles need to improve their free throw percentage and commit fewer fouls during games.
“We get into the bonus too quickly,” Brady said. “That can have a big effect on games.”
Against the Warriors the Eagles started slowly. They had lots of opportunities early but couldn’t seem to cash in layups and open looks. The Eagles ended the first quarter ahead of the Lady Warriors up by just two, 13-11. Eventually, the shots began to fall and the Lady Eagles went into the locker room with a nine point lead, 34-25. The Eagles stretched their lead in the second half with a combination of three point shots by Tyleigh Brady and post play by Caitlyn Tveter and Tamara Fox.
