The New Town Eagles football team began their 2011 season last Wednesday. The Eagles have second-year head coach Mike Montgomery returning to the helm with his assistants Frank Lindberg and first-year assistant coach, Ryan Kostelecky.
The Eagles have a short-time span before their first game, which is slated just four days from now (August 23rd) when they travel to Dickinson to take on Richardton-Taylor.
“Right now we are taking it one day at-a-time and we’d certainly like to start off with a win,” said Montgomery. “We have Richardton-Taylor for our first game and I think it’s going be a challenge but I believe that we have a solid group of juniors and many of them have played since they were freshmen.”
The Eagles veteran corps of athletes was partially stung due to graduation where they lost 14 seniors and only retained two starters. Their two remaining starters are junior quarterback Lucas Wollschlager and senior running back Rodney Drags Wolf, who will have to step into more of a leadership role this season; the numbers for this year’s athletes are down by nearly 15 players. In the beginning of the 2010 season, the Eagles had nearly 40 players and the Eagles begin this season with just 20 athletes.
“We are a little short on numbers and that will probably hurt us a little bit; a lot of the guys are going to have to play iron man football,” said assistant coach Lindberg. “Rodney Drags Wolf is our only senior and he will play a little bit at fullback. We have only one senior but we can build on that.”
