Eagles power their way to state

Will play Rugby in first round

By Jerry W. Kram

For the second time in three years, the New Town Eagles will travel to North Dakota State Class B Basketball Tournament. The Eagles earned their date with the number one ranked Rugby Panthers with a convincing 76-52 win over the Watford City Wolves.

The game was a rematch of the championship game of the District 15 tournament. The Eagles came into the region tournament with a 3-0 record over the Wolves and Eagles Head Coach Chuck Hunter said it was hard to beat a team like Watford City four times in one year. Watford City ended its season with a 15-9 record while New Town will take a 20-2 mark into the state tournament.

"Whenever we come into a game under those circumstances we tell ourselves we are the underdog," Hunter said. "It’s hard to beat them twice and then three times. Coming into this game Watford had nothing to lose so we had to play hard. So we played more aggressive and it paid off for us."

The beginning of the game was a defensive gem for the Eagles. They held the Wolves to just six points in the first quarter and 13 in the second while committing just three fouls in the first half.
