Eagles lose shootout to Honkers

For a while there, it looked like the team with the ball last would win Friday night’s game between the New Town Eagles and the Kenmare-Bowbells-Burke County Honkers. The teams traded touchdowns in the first half, but the Honkers pulled away after the break for a 50-34 victory.
The game was dominated by the weather, which featured near freezing temperatures, high winds and a few rain showers to boot. The Honkers set the tone early, scoring on a long run on their first play from scrimmage, but failing to score on the conversion. The Eagles came right back with a long sustained drive and Darryl Grady scored the touchdown and the two point conversion. The teams traded two more touchdowns in the first quarter and the Eagles led the game, 16-12.
The Eagles took a 22-12 lead on a Elijah Grady reception from Jacob Wollschlager early in the second quarter. After another Honkers score, the Eagles responded with another Darryl Grady run to put the score at 28-18 with 8:28 to go in the half. However, it took the Honkers less than two minutes to come up with another touchdown of their own. The two point conversion cut the Eagles lead to 28-26. With less than a minute to go, the Honkers scored again and the halftime score was 34-28.
