Eagles hang on for first win

By Jerry W. Kram
The New Town Eagles ran up the score in the first quarter and then hung on to pull out a 55-51 victory over the Powers Lake Ranchers in the team’s opening game of the 2018-19 season.
“We played one good quarter and three not so good,” said Eagles Head Coach Robert White. “We did everything we could to give this game away.”
The Eagles were able to move the ball with ease against the Ranchers in the first quarter, and were able to hit several three point shots. The Eagles were up by 20 points before the Ranchers were able to close with a six point run to make the score at the end of the first 24-9. The Ranchers settled down in the second quarter and the Eagles outside shots started bouncing off the rim in the second quarter, but a halftime the home team was still up by double digits 36-23.
The Eagles lead started to dwindle in the third quarter as the Ranchers, who were playing without three of their regular starters, held them to nine points. Going into the last quarter, the Ranchers had cut the Eagles lead to 42-35.
