Big Crow bucket blasts Bluejays

Lady Eagles claim third in Region

By Jerry W. Kram

A hard fought game came down to a single buzzer beating bucket as the New Town Lady Eagles secured third place in the Region 8 Girls Basketball Tournament in Williston by a score of 48-49.

The game saw 11 lead changes and 10 ties as the two teams battled to the very end. Even the stats were even in many categories as both teams finished with 41 rebounds and 17 fouls for the game. Appropriately, the first quarter ended in a 12-12 tie. New Town scored the first seven points of the second quarter and opened up the largest lead of the game at 19-12. The Bluejays came back to score the final four points of the half to make the game 19-16. The offenses charged up in the second half as Stanley outscored the Lady Eagles 17-14 in the third quarter to even the score again at 33 all. Neither team could pull away in the final minutes of the game.

"Early in the season we won a couple of close games, with Turtle Mountain and Dickinson Trinity," said Lady Eagles Head Coach Cliff Tollefson. "Now at the end of the season we end on another close win. Only 12 teams in the state can end on a win, and we’re one of them."
