Area teams stumble in early going

By Jerry W. Kram
The District 15 Girls Basketball season has gotten off to a fast start with a dozen games in just the first week. However, area teams are having a tough go of it early on.
Both New Town and Parshall won their opening games of the season last week. But over the weekend, they were on the the short end of some lopsided games at the Shootout on the Prairie in Minot Friday and Saturday.
Parshall squared off against Velva, a team ranked sixth in the state by the North Dakota Coaches’ Poll, on Friday. The Braves couldn’t keep up with Aggies and were down 43-12 at the half. They had a better second half but could get much closer than 20 points as the game ended with a score of 58-36. Parshall did better against Dickinson Trinity on Saturday. The Braves were only down five at the half 25-20. The Titans added a five point cushion to their lead in the third quarter and the Braves couldn’t close in the final quarter. The game ended with Trinity on top, 52-41.
New Town faced Midway-Minto in their game Friday, and were fairly even in the first quarter, with Mustangs leading 22-14. The Eagles were outscored 22-4 in the second quarter and Midway-Minto cruised to a 71-37 victory. It didn’t get any easier for the Eagles as they faced Number One ranked Thompson on Saturday. The Tommies had no mercy for the Eagles, who were routed 62-16.
