Another State Championship

By Jerry W. Kram

New Town High School Cross Country Coach Brian Anderson knew it was going to be tough for his team to top their performance in last year’s North Dakota Class B Cross Country Championship. After all, with a score of 45 points and five runners in the top 20, it was an incredible performance.

But this year’s team didn’t just top that record, they shattered it with a score of 24 points and five runners in the top 10 finishers. Eagles Head Coach Brian Anderson was again selected North Dakota Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year.

The Eagles had a score of 24, followed by Beulah Hazen 133, Bowman County 141, Medina Pingree Buchanan 175, and Rugby 244 to complete the top 5 teams. The Eagles had 7 runners finish in the top 15 to all earn All-State honors. Leading the Eagles was Ryan Wheeling in second, Jalen Chase third, Scott Hale fourth, Joe Chase sixth, Jaiven Hale ninth, Chace Hale 11th, and Daniel LeBeau 15th. Also running for the Eagles and were Robert White 41st, Mike Baker 54th, and Terrane Steele 71st.

There were 221 total runners in a very big race and the boys division also had 40 teams.

"It was a fitting end to a great season for the boys’ team that had a great deal of desire to be the best," Anderson said. "Scott Hale is the only senior on the team and his dedication and leadership will be greatly missed. He was All-State 3 years in a row for the Eagles."
