Tribal candidates debate North Segment’s future

By Jerry W. Kram

Wellness and fairness were two themes that echoed through a North Segment Tribal Council Representative candidates’ debate held by the Student Senate of Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College in New Town.
Student Senate President Mary Baker and Vice President Jonathon Allgood moderated the debate between Dr. Monica Mayer and former Tribal CEO Dennis Fox. The debate opened with opening statements from both candidates, six questions from the student senate and then questions from the audience.
Mayer said this is her first time running for office. She grew up in New Town and was a point guard and a two time all state team honoree on a winning girls basketball team. She started her academic career at Williston State College and went on the Northern Arizona University. She joined the Army Reserve as a medic to pay for her education, which culminated with a medical degree from the University of North Dakota through the Indians into Medicine program.
