Tax Director and Three Affiliated Tribes member Mark Fox was elected unanimously by acclamation to a third term as treasurer of the National Indian Gaming Association in Phoenix, earlier this month. Fox previously served two terms as treasurer from 1998- 2002. The term is for two years.
Fox said the position offers him an opportunity to work with Congress on policy and laws dealing with Indian gaming. He said we (large land-based tribes) have a different perspective on gaming than do the smaller tribes.
“We are concerned more with protecting our sovereignty and maintaining employment among tribal members than with the revenue,” he said. “We do not want to give up our sovereignty to the states. Overall I’m also interested in issues of transparency and being accountable to our membership.”
Gaming is not new to Fox. He has been involved in gaming since 1993. He previously served as chairman of the Gaming Commission at the 4-Bears Casino & Lodge. He was first chair of the North Dakota and Great Plains Indian Gaming Association and served on the National Indian Gaming Association Commission Tribal Advisory Committee from 2003 to 2005 and from 2008 to 2010.
