Marathon Oil donates speed signs

With traffic levels on New Town’s Main Street busier than North Dakota’s interstate highways, many are concerned with the safety of city streets. Marathon Oil Co., has made a donation to help make the street safer.
The company donated four radar signs to communities in Mountrail County. Two were donated to New Town, one each were given to Osborne and Big Bend Townships west of New Town. The signs measure a vehicle’s speed by radar and then displays it on a brightly lit panel. Susan Casale, a land professional out of Marathon’s Dickinson office, said the company has also donated signs to communities in Dunn County.
“One of Marathon’s core values is that we assist in the communities where we live and operate,” Casale said. “We feel that our donation of these signs is a commitment of those values to the communities.”
City Councilman Darrell Salter said the signs were a welcome addition. He said the city council has been frustrated with the state response to trying to regulate traffic on North Dakota Highway 23.
“We’ve talked about the speed of the traffic at just about every city council meetings,” Salter said. “We’ve talked about traffic lights and other things and we never get any response from the DOT (Department of Transportation). So when they came up with speed signs we thought it was a good idea ane we put them up.”
