National POW/MIA Recognition Day is Friday

The flag is unassuming in its mournful black and white, yet it flies proudly along with the red, white and blue and the blue and gold of the United States and North Dakota flags all across the state. It is the POW/MIA flag, created more than 40 years ago and it symbolizes the ongoing search to bring home the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who vanished into the fog of war across the world over the past 70+ years.
Friday, Sept. 20 is POW/MIA recognition day. The POW/MIA flag will fly proudly at military bases and American Legion and VFW halls and in the hearts of those who will not forget.
According to the company that created the flag, "In 1970 Mrs. Mary Hoff, an MIA wife and member of the National League of American Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia recognized the need for a symbol for our POW/MIAs. Mrs. Hoff found Norman Rivkkes who was VP of Sales at the time very sympathetic to the cause. He in turn contacted a local advertising agency and contracted graphic designer Newt Heisley to design a flag to represent the group.
