School examines new wellness policy
By Jerry W. Kram
The New Town School District is looking at a major revision of its wellness policy to bring it in line with changing federal and state recommendations on childhood nutrition and activities.
The current policy lays out guidelines that directed the operations of the school lunch plan and requirements for physical education teachers and curriculum. The policy is coordinated by the principals in each of the district’s two buildings.
The new policy outlines some goals for the new wellness policy in terms of nutrition, physical education and other school-based activities. However, the methods for achieving those goals will developed and monitored by a wellness policy committee. The committee will review how the district’s schools are implementing the wellness policy each year and inform students, parents and the public of the district’s wellness policy.
The board approved the first reading of the policy. The policy will get a second reading at the next school board meeting and if approved, will be adopted.
