Rodeo on the rise in Mandaree

By Jerry W. Kram
Two relatively new groups, the Mandaree Rodeo Committee and the Northern Badlands Indian Rodeo Association came together to put on quite a show in Mandaree on Sunday.
More than 330 bronc riders, barrel racers, bull riders, team and breakaway ropers participated in the rodeo sanction by the NBIRA. The NBIRA is a regional association of the National Indian Finals Rodeo and the top participants earned points that could take them to the National Finals. This is the first season for the NBIRA, which covers North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and parts of Montana.
The rodeo was hosted by the Mandaree Rodeo Committee, which was created a few years when the West Segment built a new rodeo grounds in Mandaree. Lloyd Vigen, president of the committee said there is a dedicated group of volunteers committed strengthening the area’s history of rodeo excellence.
