Recreation Center could happen by 2020
By Jerry W. Kram
The cooperative efforts of North Segment and the City of New Town to build a community recreation center took a step forward as the New Town City Council approved a contract to design the building as a first step towards advertising for construction bids.
The recreation center preliminary plans call for an eight lane bowling alley and 72 seat movie theater along with concessions, arcade and a party room. The estimated cost of the project is $5.6 million to $6.3 million. North Segment has committed to paying $3 million of the project and providing staff to operate the center. New Town Public School District donated the land to the city where its old Vo-Ag building sat on Main Street. In March the city accepted a bid to demolish the building. Demolition began this week.
Mayor Dan Uran said the city’s main problem was finding its share of the funding. He said he thought the city could swing the project if the cost was split over two fiscal years, 2020-21.
