Ready for spring

The New Town City Council is getting ready for spring as numerous construction projects will be starting or accelerating in the coming months.
The council accepted a bid to demolish the old Vo-Ag Center on Main Street. The building was donated to the city by the New Town School District to be demolished. The city and North Segment are working on a plan to develop the lots as a recreation center that will have a movie theater and bowling alley. The demolition should be finished in June.
City Engineer Justin Ahmann presented a draft plan for the recreation center. The plan included a 79 seat theater, eight lane bowling alley, arcade, concessions area and a party room. The plan included two options, one that would put the building just off the sidewalk with a parking lot off Second Street, and the other that would put the building behind a parking lot off Main Street.
Council members thought the draft was a good start. Council member Terry Mattson asked if the design could be changed to make it more of a multi-use facility. He thought more open space would allow youth to “just hang out” and socialize better than a separate room for events. He suggested the design could incorporate movable walls to create a closed space as needed.
