Prairie Winds residents protest evictions

Prairie Winds residents protest evictions
By Jerry W. Kram

The still air of a sunny Saturday afternoon rang with chants of “Our Land, Not Yours” as residents of the Prairie Winds Trailer Court marched from the court to the United Prairie Cooperative and down Main Street to the cooperative C-Store on Highway 23.
Residents hold the cooperative responsible for eviction notices they received in December. The residents were originally told they would have to move out by the end of May but the deadline was extended to August 31. The trailer court was purchased by a group called Future Property LLC to provide housing for United Prairie employees. Much of the crowd’s ire was directed at United Prairie Manager John Reese. Reese is also the designated representative of Future Property.
“I was out of town on Saturday,” Reese said. “I wasn’t even aware it was going on.”
