Pillows of Love

By STU MERRY

When New Town’s Marlys Aubol became the state’s American Legion Auxiliary Department President she needed a theme. Little did she know her theme and the project she chose to represent that theme would mushroom into an overwhelming success.

Her theme is "Serving Veterans with our Hearts." The symbol she chose is the heart.

While talking with other Auxiliary members, including Linda Juntunen, Past Department president, it was suggested Aubol could have Auxiliary members make heart pillows for the VA Medical Center.

The heart pillow project is a Veterans Administration and Rehabilitation project that has been in place for a few years. This past year, there was a shortage of pillows. A plea was made by VA&R chairman Mavis Goodroad that more pillows were needed.

"The VA is always asking for them," she said.

When deciding what her project for the year would be, Aubol knew immediately what it would be. She saw there was a need for pillows. "Right away, I thought that was a great idea," she said.

But how would she accomplish this goal? When the department office was moved from Jamestown to Grand Forks, while packing, Aubol found a couple of patterns made out of newspaper that had Heart Pillow Pattern written on it. Aubol now had a template to make more pillows. She had her answer.
