Oliver fills vacancy on city council

New Town has a new city council member.
William Oliver, who goes by Bill, was selected to replace Ed Strahs, who resigned from the council seat he was elected to in June, 2010. Oliver came to New Town three years ago as manager of a frac sand terminal for Wildcat Minerals. He now works for United Prairie as a dispatcher and customer service representative in the cooperative’s energy division.
Oliver grew up in Glasford, Ill., a town he says is about the size of New Town. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Associate’s Degrees in Fire Science and History. He spent three and a half years in the U.S. Air Force. He has worked as a pit boss in several casinos and as a paramedic in Houston, Texas. He is married to Jacqueline and has four adult children and three step children and they are expecting their 24th grandchild this fall.
Oliver said he has always been interested in politics but put that interest aside as he raised his family. He was elected to the Park Board in the the June 2012 election. He will have to resign his Park Board position to serve on the city council.
“This is a much more important position for the city,” Oliver said.
