NTPD terminations reversed

The New Town City Council has reversed Police Chief Jackie Halonen’s decision to terminate officers Darren and Deon Carter on appeal.
The officers, who are brothers, were terminated after an incident in Logan County near Voltaire when a chunk of ice fell off semi and damaged one of the Carter’s vehicles. They pursued the truck and forced it to stop. The truck driver said the Carters approached him in “an angry and threatening way” according to a North Dakota Highway Patrol statement.
Halonen said she terminated the Carters because their statements in a NTPD investigation of the incident contradicted each other and the NDHP statement. Under New Town’s city employee handbook, the officers had the right to appeal their termination to the city council.
