New Town woman sets the bar high in long term care

Michelle Crows Heart has a simple philosophy in her job that has propelled her into a position of statewide prominence.
Crows Heart, an employee of the Good Samaritan Society in New Town, was recently named Caregiver of the Year by the North Dakota Long Term Care Association. She joins Lisa Nelson of Luther Memorial Home in Mayville and Carmelo Maldonado of Villa Maria in West Fargo as the only three award winners in the state in 2009.
Crows Heart, Nelson and Maldonado were given their awards May 6 during a North Dakota Long Term Care Association banquet held in the Ramkota Inn in Bismarck.
“I didn’t realize it until after it was over how big of a deal it was,” Crows Heart said. “I guess hard work does pay off.”
And hard work is what Crows Heart is all about. Good Samaritan Administrator Jeanine Uran explains Crows Heart as a universal worker, one who multitasks all the time and is well liked by residents.
Crows Heart actually wears two hats in the nursing home. She is a cook and recently became a medication aide. Uran said Crows Heart recently completed training in order to be qualified to pass out meds. She has worked as a certified nursing assistant.
