New Town woman grateful to Minot State University

When Doreen Lyons transferred to Minot State University from Fort Berthold Community College, it was like stepping into a foreign country in which she didn’t speak the language.
Lyons, who is Hidatsa, wasn’t so concerned that MSU was predominently caucasian. Her bigger concern was how many of the students reacted to her being a Native American, especially in this day and age.
She said it became a major concern for her and the campus president, Robert Fuller, took her under his wing and made her feel comfortable in her surroundings to help her earn her bachelor’s degree this spring in criminal justice.
“When I started at Minot State, it was rare to see a Native American around which is crazy because we have five reservations in North Dakota,” Lyons said. “There were diversity issues at MSU. Finally, some of it became more than I could take, so I went to Dr. Fuller he helped me. He straightened it out.”
