New Town student going to Harvard Alvarez lands 2 national scholarships

Cesar Alvarez, a senior at New Town High School, has been accepted to study at prestigious Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.
Alvarez, who has maintained a 3.99 grade point average throughout high school, actually had a choice between Harvard and Duke University and chose Harvard because its curriculum is closer to Alvarez’ career path.
Alvarez intends to study political science and public policy and eventually go into law school. He said he has wanted to go to Harvard a number of years, but never really expected it would actually happen.
“Ever since the sixth grade, I’ve liked to think big and wanted to be a brain surgeon,” Alvarez said. “I said ‘Harvard is the best and I’m going there. And ever since I set that goal at Harvard, as I got older I changed it to an Ivy League school, then someplace in the east or the University of Chicago. But this, this is incredible.”
According to Alvarez, there has been a lot of hard work and sacrifices along the way, but what seemed like an eternity at times, is now paying off.
“Yes, I had to do a lot of sacrifices, but I can now honestly say it was very well worth it,” Alvarez said. “I took the studying seriously and that helps. It’s possible anywhere.”
