The New Town School Board held a special meeting Tuesday to take advantage of an opportunity to get a handle on the district’s teacher housing shortage.
“We’re still having teacher housing problems and concerns,” said New Town School Superintendent Marc Bluestone. “That’s why we put a special meeting together. A member of the community approached us and said they would like to sell us their house.”
The board’s building committee inspected the house and recommended that the the district should purchase the four bedroom home. This is the second home the board has purchased in a month. At its regular meeting in April, the board approved the purchase of a home on Eagle Drive. The home purchased Tuesday is on Fifth Avenue East. The purchase price was $193,455.
“Three years ago we wouldn’t have paid that much for a house,” Bluestone said. “That’s the impact of the housing crunch. However, it is a very nice house.
