New Town News wins 8 awards at convention
The New Town News won eight awards in advertising and editorial competition during the 123rd annual North Dakota Newspaper convention held May 8 in Bismarck.
Editor Marvin Baker took won first-place prizes in photography and editorial comments. His personal column about the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 incident was a winner among newspapers in the circulation category 1,001-1,999. The judges said, “Some really good entries in this category. It came down to the handling of the chosen subject, and this one rose to the top.”
Baker’s double picture page of the Bakken Shale oil boom was also declared a winner by the Montana judges in the picture story category. Baker’s prize was the only picture story that was printed in black and white.
Jodie Iverson took a second-place prize in the single ad category with a half-page Christmas ad from DJ Consulting titled “Put a smile on someone’s face.” The judges wrote, “good use of color. Ad is clean and easy to read.”
Baker took second in both government reporting and sports reporting. His article about cross country runners being disqualified in the state run in Jamestown was second in sports. “This is a good look into a sore subject,” the judges wrote.
